Cleburne has a rich history, from the days of the railroad to the vintage architecture of it’s downtown, but there’s something even juicer lying just below the surface — hamburger history!
Beefing since the 1930s
The oldest burger joint in town can be found nestled on 200 S. Mill Street at Morris Neal’s Handy Hamburgers. This joint has been serving up authentic smash burgers since 1932, but the menu features plenty of guilty pleasures from patty melts to cheesy tots.
“I’ve eaten at Morris Neal’s for over 45 Years. Morris used to make you sing the Dr. Pepper Song when you ordered. I’m a Pepper, she’s a Pepper, wouldn’t you like to be a Pepper too! Great burgers, don’t change a thing!”

The best things come in small packages
The tiniest burger establishment is located at 109 North Anglin Street in a 10’ by 10’ building. Originally dubbed Dorothy’s Old Fashioned Burger Bar, today Burger Bar 1949 is still slinging burgers on a 100 year old grill. Each burger recipe served up here is named after the rich local history of Cleburne.
I had some cheeseburgers and they are the best. This is the type of place that you can eat over and over and never get tired of it. I’ve been coming to this place for more than 30 years and it still tastes the same, so delicious.

Burger Bar 1949 was voted top 3 best burger joints in town by the Cleburne Times Review readers. The property was previously an old horse drawn wagon yard, Model T dealership and a taxi service. You can grab your burger and more history seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Other eateries serving up burgers in Cleburne
R&K Cafe II in Cleburne is a bustling family favorite located off North Main Street serving burgers along with breakfast, lunch and dinner specials. The original location can be found in Grandview, Texas.
The Break Room Brewing Company in Cleburne is locally owned and operated. You can find it off highway 174 where the old Prickly Pear used to be. This contemporary spot serves lunch and dinner with late night hours until midnight on Friday and Saturday. The original location is located in Colorado.
The Wright Grill is a much newer eatery located in the historic Wright Plaza Building in downtown Cleburne and serves beefy burgers as well as sizzling sandwiches and homestyle eats. Lunch is served Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Cleburnite 
I remember Mr Neal from when I was 6 years old, I’m 62 now, when his place was over across the street and at the back of the building. I remember when it caught fire and he rebuilt where it is now, I ate there every week growing up and remember him and his cooking with great fondness. Him and my grandparents grew up together, I miss him.
